THE United States (US) MILITARY on Wednesday said it had downed four drones launched by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen, aimed at US warships in the Red Sea.
US Central Command said in a statement on . or coalition ships.
“It is determined these weapons pose a threat to US merchant ships and Navy vessels in the region,” the statement said.
“This action was taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer for US Navy and merchant vessels,” he added.
In November, the Houthi group launched drone and missile attacks on ships in the Red Sea, an important area for world trade, as a show of solidarity with Palestinians during Israel’s war once morest Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.
American and British forces retaliated with attacks on the Houthi group, which has since declared American and British interests as legitimate targets as well. (AFP/Z-3)
