US Boxing Federation breaks with AIB

The United States Boxing Federation has severed its relationship with the International Boxing Association, to which it belonged for 77 years, in order to move to a rival governing body in the hope of guaranteeing its future at the Olympic Games.

The US organization announced the decision on Wednesday, in a letter to its members from its CEO Mike McAtee. The goal of the US body would be to join the World Boxing International Federation, established a couple of weeks ago, in an attempt to preserve the Olympic future of this sport.

This measure arises in view of what will be the second consecutive Olympic Games without participation by the International Boxing Association (AIB), the old and controversial governing body.

McAtee said the US federation made the decision because of the AIB’s inability “to fulfill the mission and principles of its constitution, and because of its inability to respect the Olympic charter and movement.”

Since 1946, the United States federation had been part of the AIB, formerly known as the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA). American boxers are the top boxing medal winners in Olympic history.

The end of the relationship highlights the deep schism between the current leadership of the AIB and several national programs determined to repair the broken relationship with the International Olympic Committee.

The IOC suspended its recognition of the AIB in 2019 and has not reinstated its status, amid concerns over the body’s finances and control, as well as decisions by its judges.

The division between the two organizations has deepened in recent months, when the AIB defiantly announced its own qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games. The break has meant that he no longer really has the power to select Olympians.
