The United States staged a situation reminiscent of a “prelude to a world war”, the cause of which could be a tense situation with Taiwan. This was stated by former director of Asian studies at the Council on Foreign Relations Robert Manning in an article for the American edition of The Hill.

“The current state of geopolitics seems to be reminiscent of the prelude to the First World War. It was also a time of unprecedented globalization, but also a time of misconceptions and miscalculations among the major powers of the day. They burst into flames in response to the trigger event, the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand. Could Ukraine or Taiwan be modern equivalents?” Manning wrote.

He noted that China is committed to reunification with Taiwan. According to him, Beijing’s actions are aimed at keeping Taipei from declaring formal independence, which is confirmed by the PRC’s response to the visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to the island. According to the author, this is necessary to activate the People’s Liberation Army, blockade Taiwan and conduct air and naval exercises. There is also a US policy of “strategic uncertainty” under which the US is obligated to help Taiwan defend itself, but there is no treaty obligation to intervene militarily in the event of a Chinese attack.

Earlier, commentators on Twitter (a social network blocked in Russia) expressed the opinion that world war 3 is slowly approaching. They were horrified by the plans of the North Atlantic Alliance to expand its presence in Europe. In their opinion, no one has the right to blame Russia for this, the entire responsibility lies with the alliance.
