The US government is convinced that Iran is going to launch a retaliatory attack against Israel for the assassination of líder Hamas politician Ismail Haniya, which occurred this week in Tehran, and is making preparations to respond, Axios reports, citing three Biden Administration sources.
The US intelligence community has received clear indications since Wednesday that Iran is going to launch its retaliation, one of the US officials said.
Two sources stated that Iran and its proxies will need several days to coordinate and prepare the attack on Israel.
Another US official noted that the Pentagon and US Central Command are making preparations similar to those that preceded the massive drone and missile attack launched by Iran and its allies last April.
This source explained that the preparations include US military assets in the Persian Gulf, in the eastern Mediterranean and in the Red Sea. “We expect some tough days,” she added.
The officials agreed that the Israeli retaliation will probably follow the same script as the April 13 attack, although it will potentially be broader and also involve the Lebanese Hezbollah movement.
The long arm of Zionism will suffer the response
El líder Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei, ordered this Wednesday to launch a direct attack against Israel in response to the murder of Haniya, reports The New York Times, citing officials from the Persian country.
Ismail Haniya died this Wednesday in an attack launched against his residence in the Iranian capital, where he arrived to participate in the inauguration of the elected president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, which was held the day before.
Both Iran and Hamas blame Israel for his death. Tel Aviv neither confirms nor denies that it is behind the attack that claimed Haniya’s life.
One day before Haniya’s assassination, on July 30, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out an airstrike against the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The target was Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr, also known as Hajj Mohsin, a senior adviser to the líder of the group, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who, according to Tel Aviv, would be responsible for “the massacre of children in Majdal Shams”, in the occupied Golan Heights, on July 27.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least 3 people were killed and 74 injured as a result of Israeli attacks on the suburbs of Beirut.
Nasrallah affirmed on Thursday that the war with Israel has entered a new phase and reiterated that the group is not responsible for the rocket attack that killed twelve minors on Saturday at a soccer field in the town of Majdal Shams.
