US and European lawmakers threaten Maduro with impeachment and trial if he does not leave

The US House Foreign Affairs Committee released a joint statement from lawmakers on Friday.

“Our governments are closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela, and we will work together to hold Maduro accountable if he continues to ignore the democratically expressed will of Venezuelan voters in order to steal another election,” the document states.

The statement was prepared by lawmakers on foreign affairs committees from Armenia, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Finland, the Czech Republic and Estonia.

The statement claims that Maduro lost the presidential election. The lawmakers believe that Venezuela “urgently needs negotiations” on transferring presidential powers to an opposition leader, Edmundo González.

The National Electoral Council declared Nicolas Maduro president-elect for the period 2025-2031, and according to the Electoral Council, he obtained 51% of the votes.

Protests erupted in Venezuela, and clashes began in Caracas between police and demonstrators, who began throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at security forces.

According to the prosecutor’s office, 77 members of the security forces were injured. The arrested rioters were charged with destroying state infrastructure and inciting hatred and terrorism.

The Venezuelan government announced that a number of countries had interfered in the elections and in the people’s right to self-determination.

The opposition announced its rejection of the election results, accusing the authorities of rigging them. The opposition forces considered their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, the winner of the elections.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on August 1 that the Washington administration believes it is time for political forces in Venezuela to begin discussing the transfer of powers to González.
