The United States ambassador to Venezuela, Francisco Palmeri, spoke out on Friday regarding the electoral process that will take place in the country on July 28 and said that “the electoral conditions are competitive but not ideal.” Palmieri, who operates from Bogotá due to the absence of an embassy from his country in Caracas, reiterated that the United States is fully willing to play a constructive role, respecting Venezuela’s sovereignty and its processes.
The American official stressed that, for his country, the Venezuelan presidential elections do not present ideal conditions, “but they are competitive.” He stated that the different campaign commands have informed him that each one is doing their part “and they will arrive on the 28th (of July) asking for the vote of the Venezuelans.”
Palmieri expressed concern regarding the news regarding threats to María Corina Machado and indicated that the integrity of all candidates is extremely important. For the United States representative, “the security forces within Venezuela understand the responsibility they have to ensure that.
The official declined to provide details on the talks between Joe Biden’s government and representatives of Nicolás Maduro.
