US Alleges Hamas is Using Hospital Facilities for Military Operations

The Israeli military (IDF) has uncovered what it says is evidence that Hamas was hiding weapons and possibly holding kidnapped hostages in the basement of a hospital in Gaza City. The information comes as Israel seeks to diffuse criticism of fighting near hospitals it says are terrorist hideouts.

Hamas is hiding in hospitals. Today we will reveal it to the world,” IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said during an overnight news conference.

Speaking in English, Hagari provided information showing that Hamas weapons were stored under the Rantisi Children’s Hospital in Gaza, and showed rooms believed to be used to hold hostages.

In one room, which appeared to be a living room, a tiled wall had curtains and a calendar of guard shifts beginning on Oct. 7, the day Hamas entered Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages.

In an adjacent room, there was a chair with a woman’s robe placed on it and a rope attached to one of the legs of the chair, which Hagari said was evidence of the restraints used.

A chair stood under equipment donated by the World Health Organization, on top of which was placed a bottle for feeding the baby, and on the floor were diapers.

A military spokesman did not consider the version that the human premises under the hospital could have been used as a hideout.

“This is a war crime, this is a crime against humanity,” said D. Hagari, accusing the international organizations that finance the hospitals of aiding terrorism.

There was also a motorcycle believed to have been used to transport the hostages to Gaza, as well as what are believed to be makeshift bathrooms, a kitchen and ventilation pipes.

Israel continues to investigate whether the hostages were indeed held at the site, and forensic teams were sent there on Monday.

Weapons found in the hospital basement included suicide vests, grenades, AK-47 assault rifles, explosive devices, grenade launchers and other weapons, the IDF said. D. Hagari described this area as the center of command and control of Hamas.

“Hamas is using hospitals as a weapon of war,” Hagari said in a video from the hospital’s basement, standing in a room decorated with colorful children’s wood carvings above weapons on the floor.

The press conference came as Israel Defense Forces closed in on al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, where Jerusalem says the main center of Hamas operations is hiding. The focus on al-Shifa and other hospitals has increased pressure on Israel to do more to protect Gazan civilians caught in the crossfire.

“Our war is against Hamas, not against the people of Gaza. Especially not against patients, women or children, D. Hagari said. “Our war is against Hamas, which uses them as human shields.”
