The United States (US) once more urged Israel to cancel plans for a major ground operation in Rafah, where more than 1.5 million Palestinian refugees are trapped following months of fighting in Gaza.
“We have the same goal as Israel to defeat Hamas. “But this risks killing more civilians, and risks causing greater chaos with the provision of humanitarian aid,” US Ambassador Robert Wood told the UN Security Council, Tuesday (26/3).
Wood also said Washington was working to quickly increase humanitarian aid to Gaza, especially as not enough aid was reaching the civilians who still needed it.
“The reality is that children are starving to death because humanitarian aid cannot reach them,” he said
Children should not die from malnutrition in Gaza or anywhere else. Moreover, a percent of Gaza’s population experiences severe acute food insecurity.
After 170 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas, the UN Security Council on Monday adopted Resolution 2728, which calls for a cessation of hostilities during the holy month of Ramadan, leading to a lasting and sustainable ceasefire.
In addition, the resolution calls on Hamas and other militant groups to release all hostages held since October 7. (AFP/M-3)
