The centre-back staggered off the pitch in the 84th minute of Thursday’s last-16 second-leg tie with Sao Paulo FC, fell and was taken off the field unconscious. According to the hospital, the diagnosis was arrhythmia.

Isquierdo’s death is an “irreplaceable loss” for his club, with Sao Paulo posting on the X platform, “Juan, you will always be with us.” South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) President Alejandro Domingos expressed his condolences to the Izquierdo club and his family. “South American football is in mourning.”

In 2018, Izquierdo made his conference debut with Cerro Atletico Club. He has played 1 game with the Nationals since 2022, during which he played 33 games and scored 2 goals. He left behind a wife, Selina, and two children, the second of whom was born days before Izquierdo’s fall, according to Nationalist President Alejandro Balbi.
