Uruguay, one step away from joining the UN Security Council

Montevideo.- Uruguay is the “only” candidate from Latin America and the Caribbean and has the necessary votes to be elected in October as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Foreign Minister Luis Almagro said on Tuesday.

“The Uruguayan candidacy was endorsed. This means that all the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are choosing Uruguay to occupy the seat that corresponds to Latin America and the Caribbean on the Security Council,” the diplomat told Sarandí radio. “We are the only candidates in the region for that position and with the necessary votes to achieve it,” when the vote is held during the UN General Assembly in October, the official added.

The achievement of Uruguayan diplomacy was announced by the country’s representative to the UN, Gonzalo Koncke, to the newspaper El Observador, which published it in its edition of this Tuesday. The support of the countries of the regional bloc “was unanimous,” Koncke told the newspaper. Occupying a place in this UN body is highly coveted since it gives the countries that occupy it the opportunity to make decisions regarding international security issues, such as UN peacekeeping operations, Syria and other conflicts.

The 15-member council includes five permanent members with veto power: the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France. The rest serve two-year terms. Uruguay’s foreign minister will present his nomination to lead the Organization of American States (OAS) on February 18. Almagro appears as the only candidate and has the support of 20 countries to be the successor to Chilean José Miguel Insulza, whose term ends in May.
