Uruguay plays Brazil away and regains second place in qualifying

SALVADOR, Brazil (AP) — In a gray game where the highlight was the goalscoring, Uruguay regained second place in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday with a 1-1 draw with Brazil.

Federico Valverde gave Celeste the lead with a curling shot from the edge of the area. Gerson scored the first goal of his Brazilian senior career in a similar performance at El Salvador’s Fontenoy Stadium.

Uruguay has 20 points, one point ahead of Ecuador and Colombia, and five points behind Argentina, which leads and has already secured qualification.

In a particularly lackluster match, Brazil finished fifth with 18 points. The top six teams advance directly to the World Cup, while the seventh place team participates in the intercontinental play-offs.

At the end of the game, the public cheered the Selecao but lacked clear chances in front of the goal. Although goalkeeper Ederson did not need to make a difficult save, Uruguay was closer to victory for most of the first half.

Valverde opened the scoring in the 55th minute after Brazil’s defenders failed three times to move the ball out of the penalty area. The Real Madrid midfielder sent the ball to the upper left corner of the goal defended by Ederson.

In the 61st minute, Gerson equalized the score with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. The ball passed through the left post and goalkeeper Sergio Lochte.

Attacker Rafinha said he understood the public boos. But he disapproved of them.

“We played well. We did everything we could to get out of here with a win,” he said. “You have to keep your head high. It’s going to be very difficult to beat us.

Asked whether Brazil would continue to suffer from points trouble when matches against Colombia and Argentina resume in March, the Barcelona striker replied: “We are also strong.”

Forward Vinicius Júnior failed to perform well after missing a penalty in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Venezuela and was not at his best for Canarinha on Tuesday.
