Uruguay EEE Outbreak: Latest Updates and News from WHO and PAHO

On January 30, 2024, the IHR Focal Point of theUruguay has notified the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) of a confirmed human case of Western Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The case, a 42-year-old from a rural area in the department of San José, is the first human case of EEE in Uruguay since 2009. Currently, the patient has recovered and been discharged from the hospital. Regarding the epidemiological context, the individual resides in a rural area of ​​a department of the country where viral circulation of WEE is known; this department has the highest incidence of confirmed cases in equines in the country. According to the epidemiological investigation, the patient did not have direct contact with equines.

A later report indicates that 2 human cases of EEE were confirmed in Montevideo and the neighboring department of San Jose; the report mentions the monitoring of 15 suspected cases in the departments of Canelones, Montevideo, Paysandu, Rio Negro, Rocha, San Jose and Soriano.

Between December 5, 2023 and January 30, 2024, the Uruguayan Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries confirmed 76 cases of EEE in 16 departments of the country: Artigas, Canelones, Cerro Largo, Durazno, Flores , Lavalleja, Montevideo, Paysandú, Río Negro, Rivera, Rocha, Salto, San José, Soriano, Tacuarembó and Treinta y Tres. The San José department recorded the highest proportion of equine cases.
