The Government of Uruguay demanded this Saturday the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela following the recent arrest of the former governor of the State of Mérida and former deputy opposed to the Government of Nicolás Maduro, Williams Dávila.

“In light of the imprisonment of Williams Dávila, we demand his release and that of all political prisoners,” said Uruguayan Foreign Minister Omar Paganini in a message on the social network X.

In the same message, Paganini indicated that the Venezuelan government continues to “persecut, imprison and kidnap” citizens who call for democracy and demand respect for the popular will expressed at the polls.

Williams Dávila was arrested on Thursday night after participating in a demonstration in Caracas, where hundreds of people called for the release of those considered political prisoners, criminal lawyer and human rights defender Rafael Narváez told EFE.

The opposition leader was “intercepted” by “a van without license plates and two motorcycles,” where officials were traveling who did not have identification from any state security body, according to Narváez.

In this regard, opposition leader María Corina Machado also called for the immediate release of “political prisoners” after several leaders linked to the largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), were arrested in recent days following the elections of July 28.

On Thursday, hundreds of Venezuelans demonstrated in Caracas calling for the release of those considered political prisoners, as well as to reject the “repression” that they denounced as a result of protests against the official result of the presidential elections on July 28, in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) awarded the victory to President Nicolás Maduro, a fact that has been questioned inside and outside the country.
