Uruguay beats Brazil to reach Copa America semi-finals

USA – Uruguay advanced to the semi-finals of the Copa America, following defeating its Brazilian counterpart 4-2 on penalties, Sunday, at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, USA, in the quarter-finals.

The original time of the match ended in a goalless draw, with the Uruguayan team having a clear advantage in the offensive aspects throughout the two halves, but the team did not make good use of the opportunities that were available to it.

The match witnessed the early exit of Uruguayan Ronald Araujo, Barcelona defender, due to injury in the 33rd minute and left the match, while his teammate Naitan Nandez was sent off in the 74th minute of the match, which was missed by Brazilian player Vinicius Junior due to suspension.

Uruguay managed to secure qualification on penalties following Fede Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Manuel Ugarte scored, while Jose Gimenez missed.

Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet played the heroic role in the shootout, saving Eder Militao’s first shot and then hitting the post to keep out Douglas Luiz’s effort, while Gabriel Martinelli and Andreas Pereira scored for Brazil.

Uruguay will meet Colombia next Thursday at the Bank of America Stadium, which qualified at the expense of Panama with five clean goals in the same round.
