Ursula von der Leyen: Announced an economic package of 1 billion euros in Lebanon

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a €1 billion economic package for Lebanon during a joint press conference in Beirut with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

“I can announce a financial package of 1 billion euros for him Lebanonwhich will be available from this year until 2027. We want to contribute to the socio-economic stability of Lebanon,” stressed Ursula von der Leyen.

In relation to immigration, he noted that EU is committed to keeping legal routes open to Europe “and to resettle refugees from Lebanon in the EU”, as its president said Commission. “At the same time, we rely on good cooperation with you to prevent illegal immigration and combat migrant trafficking,” he underlined.

Ursula von der Leyen pointed out that “it is vital to ensure the well-being of host communities and Syrian refugees. Since 2011, the EU has supported Lebanon with €2.6 billion – not only for Syrian refugees, but also for host communities. And we will continue to support you.”

“We will also look at how we can make EU aid more effective. This includes exploring how to work towards a more structured approach to voluntary returns to Syria in close collaboration with UNHCR,” he said.

In addition, according to the protothema, he stated that security and stability are key elements for investments. He added that, among other things, the Lebanese armed forces and other security forces will be supported, focusing mainly on the provision of equipment and training for border management. In addition, it would be very useful for Lebanon to enter into a working agreement with Frontex, especially for information sharing and situational awareness, he added.

It is the only solution that can bring lasting peace and stability to the Middle East,” he stressed and concluded by noting that work to de-escalate the conflict must continue, but also expressing concern over the unstable situation in southern Lebanon.
