Dubai: The UAE has requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Gaza. The UAE also strongly criticized Israel’s move to launch a ground attack. The UAE has also suggested to the superpowers that they need immediate intervention so that the situation does not become more complicated.
The UAE asked Brazil, which is the chairman of the Security Council, to convene an emergency meeting. The UAE made the request in the presence of Martin Griffiths, who is in charge of UN humanitarian activities, and Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the Agency for Palestine Refugees.
Earlier, the UN agencies expressed their concern that Israel’s continued attack on Gaza is leading to a major humanitarian disaster. It is estimated that the Security Council meeting may be held soon following accepting the request of the UAE. The UAE has provisional membership status in the 15-member UN Security Council.
Meanwhile, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning Israel’s ground attack. The UAE called for an immediate ceasefire to be declared for the safety of civilians and for human rights to be protected under international laws and treaties. The UAE, along with other Arab countries, supported the resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza passed by the UN General Assembly on Friday.
