Urgent Medical Supplies Shortage Puts Premature Infants at Risk in Gaza: What They Need to Survive

In light of the severe shortage of necessary medical supplies, doctors are warning that death may be the inevitable fate of dozens of premature infants in the besieged and poor Gaza Strip, which has been exposed to an Israeli war for 42 days.

What conditions do premature infants need? Why do their lives seem to be in more danger than others? Especially in light of the talk regarding the necessity of evacuating hospitals by the Israelis.

Although the risks appear to include all critical cases in the Gaza Strip’s hospitals, a number of which are out of service, the special circumstances that premature infants need… make their lives more vulnerable than others, in light of the lack or absence of oxygen… and premature babies are babies. Those born before the 37th week, according to the definition of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

There are necessities to life for premature infants, such as urgent need for care, difficulty breathing, poor temperature regulation, and a high risk of serious diseases and even death in the first four weeks of their lives.

UNICEF figures say that one out of every 10 children in the world is born prematurely, which means that premature babies constitute a significant percentage and need special care.

Births in Gaza were no exception, but the lack of means prompted doctors to resort to warm water bags and aluminum covers to provide adequate temperature for premature babies, as primitive means of preserving their lives.

With a number of hospitals out of service due to a lack of fuel and the absence of necessary mechanisms such as oxygen, every passing moment, according to doctors, means a real danger to these children who may leave the world under normal circumstances.
