2:24 p.m.: WHO recalls urgent need for medical care for thousands of Gazans

The World Health Organization welcomed the first medical evacuations to Egypt from Gaza and “Egypt’s decision to accept for treatment 81 injured and sick people from the Gaza Strip.” However, the WHO recalls that thousands of Gazans need medical care – whether they are injured or suffering from chronic illness. The organization notes that the 88 injured who arrived in Egypt are only a small portion of the people in urgent need of aid in the Palestinian territory.

The WHO estimates that there are several thousand injured people who need care, “including many children”. Besides this, more than 1,000 patients “need dialysis to stay alive” and more than 2,000 patients need to treat their cancer, specifies the organization. As for heart patients and diabetics, the WHO counts 45,000 and 60,000 respectively.

“These patients must be able to have sustainable access to health care in Gaza,” insists the WHO, adding that hospitals and other health facilities must be protected from bombardments and not diverted for military purposes.

The WHO, like other UN agencies or NGOs active in Gaza, are demanding in particular that Israel give the green light to the importation of fuel to be able to power hospital generators, but also the pumps of desalination plants and even bakeries.
