Urgent Federal Action Needed for Port Dispute: Impact on Canadian Supply Chains

We are now one week away from work and urgent federal action is needed to resolve this dispute and mitigate the economic damage to the country, Danielle Smith wrote in a letter dated Saturday to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

This statement was posted on social media and reproduced in a press release. About 7,400 workers stopped work on July 1, at regarding 30 ports in British Columbia, including those in Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

According to Danielle Smith, Canadian supply chains have been negatively impacted over the past few years for different reasons, such as the pandemic, extreme weather conditions and other labor disruptions in the transportation sector.

For these reasons, Alberta supports an immediate recall of Parliament for consideration of a bill to address this critically important issue, said Danielle Smith.

The shutdown of trade at the ports will have significant negative economic consequences that undermine the competitiveness and reputation of Alberta and Canada as reliable suppliers to international customers.

Danielle Smith explains that $12.4 billion of Alberta’s merchandise exports, including grain, mineral and forest products, passed through the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert in 2021.

Danielle Smith and Justin Trudeau spoke regarding the situation on Friday, when the Prime Minister was there to attend the Stampede. Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen also called on the federal government to consider legislating a return to work.
