Pointing out the urgent challenges that have arisen in the Lebanese state and requesting solutions for them, the fathers of the Eastern Churches and those related to the Synod, made a request to the international community. The 8-paragraph request mentions the situation in Lebanon and the efforts to be undertaken for its salvation and calls everyone’s attention to it.
In the meeting chaired by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parol, the Lebanese, Patriarch, Bishops, Priests, Consecrated, Synod members, Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary of the United Church for Relations with States, Fr. Michael Jalakh, Secretary of the Dicastery for Eastern Churches, Sister Nathalie Beckwart, Under Secretary of the Synod, Archbishop Marco also participated.
Pope Francis thanked him for his services to humanitarian progress and peace in the Middle East, especially in Lebanon. The petition calls for an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and restoration of peace.
The petition shares concerns regarding Lebanon’s future. The petition highlights the insecurity created by the country’s spiraling economic and social collapse, and underlines the suffering refugees are suffering as a result.
In order to resolve this ongoing crisis, the smooth running of the constitutional institutions, the re-election of the President of the Republic and the implementation of the necessary reforms are imperative, the petition said.
The petition puts forward the need for dialogue between Christians and the Lebanese people on the other hand, and the importance of building a legal system that establishes citizenship and equality.
As the issue of Lebanon depends on conflicts in the Middle East, specifically the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the petition calls on the United Nations and the friendly countries of Lebanon.
All are invited through the petition to uphold Christian values, to bear witness to the Gospel, and to walk together in listening, debate and discernment.
