Urgent Call for Blood and Platelet Donations: ICHH Seeks O+, O-, and A+ Donors!

The Canary Islands Institute of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy (ICHH), which is part of the Canary Islands Government’s Department of Health, is calling on the entire population to increase reserves of blood derivatives, which have been affected in recent days, it said in a press release.

He stressed that donations from all blood types are required, especially O+, O- and A+, and platelets.

The ICHH, he added, has reinforced this call through social media and increased the number of SMS messages it sends to blood and platelet donors registered in its database. It has also opened various donation points to facilitate the extraction and, thus, increase the stock of blood derivatives.

Where to donate in La Palma

The La Palma University Hospital, on Calle Buenavista de Arriba, no number, in Breña Alta, has a fixed extraction point where donations can be made, with or without an appointment, from Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 20:00 and on Fridays from 10:00 to 15:30. It will be closed on Saturdays and donations can be made on Sundays from 13:00 to 20:00. This donation point makes the following telephone numbers available to donors: 922 185 321 and 922 185 320.

Where to donate in Gran Canaria

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a donation campaign will be held at the El Mirador Shopping Centre, in premises B31, opposite the Lefties store. It will take place until Friday, 13 September, from 9:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Donations can also be made until Friday at Calle Mayor de Triana, numbers 70-72, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Opening hours will be from 9:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

In Agüimes, donations can also be made from this Wednesday to Friday in the Primero de Mayo square, at the Arinaga intersection (Ansite Avenue). Opening hours are from 10:15 to 13:30 and from 17:15 to 20:30.

As regards the ICHH’s fixed collection points, donations can be made at the provincial headquarters located at 4 Alfonso XIII Street, Monday to Friday, from 9:15 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, in the annex to the Vecindario health centre, from Monday to Wednesday in the afternoon, from 5:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., and on Thursday and Friday in the morning from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

You can also go to other fixed points of the Canary Islands Transfusion Network (without an appointment) such as the Hospital Universitario Materno-Infantil de Canarias, from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 13:30; the Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín, from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 to 19:30 and the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria, where you can donate from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 19:30, except holidays (all have a donor ford).

Finally, at Hospiten Roca San Agustín you can donate by appointment by calling 928 730 362 (option 3), from Monday to Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (except holidays).

Where to donate in Tenerife

In San Cristóbal de La Laguna you can donate this Thursday, the 12th. Specifically, in Valle Guerra, next to the Post Office, from 9:45 to 13:45 and from 16:45 to 20:30. You can also donate on Friday at the mobile unit located on Heraclio Sánchez Street (next to ‘Muy Mucho’), from 10:15 to 13:45 and from 16:45 to 20:15.

The donation point at the El Trompo Shopping Centre in La Orotava (sector 10, Las Arenas, exit 36 ​​of the TF-5, next to China Town) will be available from Wednesday to Friday. Donor service hours will be from 10:00 to 13:30 and from 17:00 to 20:30.

Donations can also be made in San Miguel this Wednesday and Thursday at the collection point located on the main road, in front of the Manhattan cafeteria. This Wednesday the hours will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. and on Thursday from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and from 5:15 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A blood donation team will travel to Arona this Wednesday, specifically to the Roberto Fernández de Guaza Smart Training Centre. The hours will be from 10:30 to 13:15 and from 17:15 to 19:45.

In Fasnia, donations can be made at the Plaza de Hilario Trujillo, without a number, on Friday, September 13, from 9:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and from 4:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Blood donations can be made at the fixed blood donation point in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, located at Méndez Núñez, number 14, from Monday to Friday, from 9:15 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and donations can be made at the fixed point located at the San Isidro Health Centre in Granadilla de Abona, at Arguayoda Street, number 2, from Monday to Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. This point has a parking space reserved for donors and telephone assistance is provided through the number 677980518, except on holidays.

As regards the fixed points of the Canary Islands Transfusion Network, at the Canary Islands University Hospital, on the main road C-822.La Cuesta-Taco, floor 0, next to the lifts, donations can be made (without an appointment) from Sunday to Friday and public holidays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Telephone: 922 678 670.

Where to donate in El Hierro

The Insular Hospital Nuestra Señora de los Reyes, located at 1 Barriales Street, has a fixed extraction point where donations can be made without an appointment by calling 690 886 059 (appointment times are Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Donations can be made on Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., except on holidays.

Requirements to give

To donate blood you must be between 18 and 65 years old (up to 60 if it is your first donation), weigh more than 50 kilos, be in good general health and, if you are a woman, not be pregnant.
