Blood stocks from rhesus negative groups have reached a critical threshold in Belgium, the Red Cross said on Monday. As the end-of-year holidays approach, the organization is sounding the alarm and once once more calling for donations.
“We can currently only meet 50% of hospital requests in negative groups“, warns the foundation.”In four weeks, the end of year holidays will be here, with fewer and less attended collections, donors on vacation (…) Without rapid action and without massive mobilization of donors with a negative group, the situation will continue to deteriorate. deteriorate from week to week.“
This is why the Red Cross Blood Service is calling on people with a negative blood group to come to one of its collection points to donate blood.
The O negative (O-) group is particularly affected by the shortage due to its character as a universal donor: blood bags of this type are used by default in emergency situations when the patient’s blood group is not yet known or, in other cases, when the blood reserves corresponding to the latter are unavailable.
Consequently, the O- group represents 11 to 12% of transfusion needs while only 6 to 7% of the general population is actually in this group.
