The Urban Roads festival opens its doors to students from the college of Quingey (Doubs) in preview for a site visit. It will take place in the Blanchotte activity zone on Friday May 5 and Saturday May 6, 2023.

The organizers of the Urban Roads festival and its volunteers are on hand. On the eve of the official opening of the doors, the students of the Félix Gaffiot college in Quingey in the Doubs are expected for a preview visit of the site. In the activity area of La Blanchotte, the scene is already well established, but the technicians have not finished busying themselves. A little over a kilometer separates the college from the festival site, a distance covered on foot by the four 4th grade classes and the educational team that accompanies them. On the straight line that separates the two places, the small troop is spotted from afar.

Allan Lemarquis, the director of the festival, and Lenha Verpillat, volunteer dedicated to the coordination of the artists, welcome the students and explain the safety instructions directly to them. College students already know the team, which proposed an intervention at Quingey College on April 24, 2023 to raise awareness of the organization of a festival and awaken vocations among students. Everyone got together to have a good time of discovery and sharing, but first of all, we are restating the framework in terms of prevention. Because on a site being assembled, the organizers recall the safety distances vis-à-vis construction machinery. After the formalities, Allan and Lehna tackle the heart of the matter: the organization of a festival.

Lehna explains her role to the students. She accompanies the artists and makes the link between the musicians and their arrival on the stage. About twenty groups are expected on the same stage on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 May. The coordination must be precise between everyone’s arrival, from the dressing room to the preparation time behind the stage, until the arrival in front of the public. The volunteer also highlights the many trades needed to create a festival by detailing the importance of those who are not seen in the spotlight, but who ensure the smooth running of the event. Behind the scenes, lighting designers, sound engineers, the security team and a host of other trades are busy.

The students are curious and in the small groups, the questions burst forth: “Is it possible to have autographs? What is the list of artists? How do you monitor the festival at night? Why is the stage so high?“. The coordinator explains to them the setting up of the stage, thanks to the work of regarding fifteen volunteers and professionals, specifying: “It is important to know that all of this is a huge puzzle, we put everything together piece by piece.“Because on a sloping ground, the team had to use ingenuity to install this building of 22×15 meters.

After having been on the festival site, it’s up to the Felix Gaffiot college in Quingey to open its doors at Urban Roads. The group “June 21 the duo” came to propose a time of exchange with the 5th and 4th graders before performing on stage this Friday. Manon and Julien met on the shores of Lake Annecy 11 years ago, on a certain June 21. They fall in love and start a musical project together 5 years ago, which underlines the importance of the date of this meeting. The pop group is selected among the finalists to represent France at l’Eurovision, but it is finally Barbara Pravi who wins. Accustomed to the scene, they opened for Louane, Trois Cafés Gourmands, Marc Lavoine and Magic System.

When Manon asks middle school students regarding their style of music, the answer is unanimous: rap! The names of Lomepal, Soprano, Lacrim, or even Gazo come back. “June 21 the duo” writes and composes his own songs, but also does it for other artists. A pupil asks them if they have already written for Orelsan, but not yet. On the other hand, they have already imagined pieces for Adeline Toniutti, the singing teacher of the reality TV show Star Academy and originally from Audincourt in the Doubs.

For Manon and Julien, doing this job is the realization of a dream. The children do not hesitate to share theirs: professional rugby player, climbing to the top of the Empire State Building, or even dog sledding. Julien invites his audience to participate by proposing: “Can we revise together for tomorrow?” and specifies to the pupils that they come at 9:50 p.m. on Friday. The group from Haute-Savoie plays three songs in front of the pupils: “Galley“, “Hello” et “Reggae“. Middle school students participate on “Hello“, which they know and sing together at the time of the chorus. An audience made up of 5th and 4th graders is not the easiest to seduce, but “June 21 the duo” manages to get the children on board in their As part of this partnership with the festival, each college student has received a place to attend either the evening of Friday May 5 or Saturday May 6. It is therefore very likely that “June 21 the duo” will find many familiar faces in the audience.

The first edition of the Urban Roads festival promises a beautiful moment of living together, to share with family or friends from 5 p.m. on Friday May 5, 2023. France 3 Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is a partner of this event.
