The slowdown in French demographic growth is confirmed. Between 2015 and 2021, the population increased by 0.3% per year on average, a rate 0.2 points lower than that observed over the previous five years, according to an INSEE study published Thursday. In total, France nevertheless gained 203,000 inhabitants each year, “the equivalent of the commune of Reims”. At 1is January 2021, it had 67.408 million inhabitants.

Most of the growth is explained by the “natural balance” – namely the difference between births and deaths. This contributes 0.2 points to population growth, compared to 0.1 points for “apparent” migratory balance.
