UQAM lecturers’ strike canceled

“After a night of negotiations”, the strike of lecturers at the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM) scheduled for Monday was finally canceled at the last minute.

To justify its decision to cancel the walkout, the Union of Professors and Teachers of UQAM (SPPEUQAM-CSN) indicated that it had received a “settlement hypothesis from the conciliator” named in the file.

“The union has therefore agreed to suspend the triggering of the unlimited general strike, scheduled for this morning,” mentioned the SPPEUQAM-CSN in a press release, specifying that the rally scheduled for Monday morning on Place Pasteur is also canceled.

The union asks its approximately 2,500 members to give their lessons on this Monday, as usual, adding that “given the very tight deadlines, no member will be penalized if they cannot attend their course”.

The direction of UQAM welcomed in a press release the conclusion of this agreement following a process of conciliation with the representatives of the Union of teachers and professors.

“This agreement in principle provides for the renewal of the collective employment contract of university lecturers,” said UQAM, adding that the union negotiating committee will shortly submit this agreement to its members.
