Thus, he paid for Martinez and her family’s luxury vacations in Polynesia and Thailand with city money while the same “voices” convinced him to hire her relatives to work at city hall and renovate her home. In fact, local companies contributed for free to the renovation for fear of losing collaborations and contracts with the municipality.
The mayor’s lawyer, Jean-Marc Darigad, told the BBC about the scandal: “It’s a crazy story. It’s incredible because he’s a man in politics, he’s a mayor and a former MP and he’s very smart. And you discover that such a man can be manipulated by a woman. This is a woman who came into his life and told him I can talk to your dead father. She found a spiritual weakness in him and exploited it for personal gain. It took him a long time before he admitted that he was a victim of fraud.”
But Martinez’s lawyer, Lick Abratkiewicz, has a different opinion: “She admitted that she betrayed the mayor’s trust but it’s not manipulation because she acknowledged what she did and other clients, including doctors and architects, said she has secret powers. It revealed details about their lives that no one else knew.”
However, local residents who spoke to the BBC, argue that in a city where sex abounds because of swingers, the mayor’s story with the 44-year-old is probably a story of love and sex. “For me sex is at the heart of the scandal. Where money is involved, that means sex is a part, too,” said one resident of the city.
Fabienne Varesano, a staunch critic of the mayor and a councilor with Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally party, called on Gilles D’Ettor to step down. She said of the mayor: “He may be generous and in love with many different women but using taxpayers’ money is another story. He has ridiculed our city and outside it.” Gilles D’Ettore has been elected mayor with the center-right Republican party.
