“Some winemakers from Upper Austria are saying that the 2023 vintage will be the best vintage of all time,” said Klaus Stumvoll from the plant production department in the Upper Austrian Chamber of Agriculture during a visit to the vineyard in Oftering. The managing director of the state winegrowing association is euphoric regarding “this year’s perfect conditions: two weeks of rain in the spring, then repeated sun and rain and a warm autumn. This year the wine is really ripe. We can really look forward to the fine wines in spring.”
The quality comes not only from the vineyard, but also from the cellar. The Upper Austrian winemakers don’t need to hide there. Long-time wine experts recently stated that “the greatest dynamics in viticulture are currently taking place in Upper Austria”. “You can’t get a nicer compliment,” says Stumvoll.
In his vineyard in Oberndorf near Oftering, winemaker Florian Eschlböck looks through the refractometer and measures the sugar content of his Chardonnay, which he is producing as a late harvest for the first time this year thanks to the good weather: “19 KMW,” says the gentleman over 13 hectares, five of which are organically farmed. If the weather holds for a few more days, there will be even more on the Klosterneuburg must scale and the alcohol content will be exactly right for the Spätlese.
“Each of the Upper Austrian winemakers is fully committed to it,” Eschlböck reveals the secret of the most innovative wine country: “No one has simply taken over or inherited the wine business, everyone is going their own individual way.” That’s why there is still a lot of the above. to be expected from winemakers. “The Upper Austrian winegrowers on their total of 100 hectares deliver top quality,” says Agriculture Regional Councilor Michaela Langer-Weninger. She is convinced that there will be a lot more to be heard regarding Upper Austrian wine on the national and international wine scene. But it is necessary to work on marketing, adds Stumvoll.
