Upon noticing a crack on the southern slope of Mount Gediminas, stabilization works are started

The work was started after a small crack in the soil was detected during the continuous monitoring of the slopes, which was caused by the rainy weather that prevailed in the fall. They will be carried out by the company “Rekreacsenia statyba”.

Drainage will be installed at the location of the ground crack, which will lead the accumulated water to the foot of the slope, and the slope itself will be stabilized by forging metal rods and laying a geogrid. Similar temporary slope stabilization measures were used in other parts of the mountain.

“Their effectiveness is proven by the fact that in places where they have been applied, the threat of landslides has not been recorded for a long time,” the report reads.

The works are carried out under a permanent emergency emergency works contract, which, according to the museum, allows for an immediate response to any changes taking place on Mount Gediminas.

A 24-hour monitoring system installed on the mountain warns of them in advance. Sensors installed on all slopes of the mountain record ground changes with millimeter accuracy.

The museum points out that prolonged rain has increased the water level inside the mountain, but the slopes themselves, except for the area being stabilized, are relatively stable.

The institution emphasizes that the condition of the mountain remains dependent on weather conditions, and the long-term stability of the entire mountain will be ensured only after the implementation of the contract works according to the final clean-up project.

The state of the mountain is concerned after the large landslides that occurred in February 2016. The last time a more massive landslide occurred in Gediminas Mountain after intense rain was in June of last year. Then it was temporarily forbidden to visit it, later it was only allowed to go up the mountain by cable car.
