The budget committee for agriculture came on Saturday with an updated basis for figures for the spring’s agricultural negotiations, writes the Ministry of Agriculture in a press release.
The Budget Committee for Agriculture (BFJ) annually prepares basic material for the agricultural negotiations.
– Income must rise
– Norway’s Farmers’ Association has long worked for incomes in agriculture to rise to the level of other groups. On Thursday, the Storting discussed how the income level should be calculated. On this basis, the budget committee was tasked with calculating the level and now the reconciled figures are available which will be the basis for this year’s agricultural negotiations, says leader of the Norwegian Farmers’ Association, Bjørn Gimming.
The calculation also shows an average income gap of around NOK 136,000 in 2024. In 2023, this income difference was NOK 210,800, Gimming points out.
The comparison group’s income level is NOK 657,000 for 2024. The farmers’ income should be compared at the level of this figure, the Farmers’ Association believes.
Chaos in the Storting
– The Budget Committee’s material and new numerical basis are the basis for the upcoming negotiations on a new agricultural agreement and for the government’s goal of increasing agriculture’s income opportunities, says Agriculture and Food Minister Geir Pollestad (Sp).
Earlier this week, the Minister of Agriculture hoped to get the Storting on board with a target to close the income gap for farmers by 2027, but the majority voted once morest it. In the agreement with the Conservatives and Liberals, 1,845 hours a year for the farmers were set as the basis, while the government proposed 1,750 hours at the last minute on Thursday morning.
1750 hours is the usual number of hours in many workplaces. The government’s reversal in this case occurred following fierce protests from the industry.
