US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller confirmed on Thursday that the US special envoy for Iranian affairs, Robert Malley, is “on leave,” and that Abram Bailey is carrying out his duties and leading the State Department’s work in this field.
For his part, Malley said on Thursday that his “security clearance is under review” and that he expected the investigation to end “with a good result and soon”.
He added, according to Archyde.com, “I was informed that my security clearance is under review. I did not get any other information, but I expect the investigation to end with a good result and soon.”
“In the meantime, I’m on vacation,” he added, confirming a tweet to a reporter from the Axios news website.
Malley, who participated in former US President Bill Clinton’s efforts in 2000 to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians and in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, was appointed special envoy for Iran in January of 2021.
According to the Archyde.com news agency, “It is not clear what this vacation means” for efforts to constrain Iran’s nuclear program.
Mali led the Biden administration’s efforts to revive the nuclear deal with Iran, which would curb its nuclear program.
Iranian and Western officials said earlier this month, following efforts to revive the deal failed, that the United States had held talks with Iran to “ease tensions” by charting steps that might curb Iran’s nuclear program, release some detained American citizens and unfreeze some Iranian assets abroad.
