During treatment on the pitch, players and staff from both teams formed a screen around Vaessen before he was taken off the pitch on a stretcher. At this point, however, the keeper was responsive and conscious once more.
He was taken to a hospital for further examinations. Players from both teams cried and prayed for Vaessen. The game was then stopped by the referee.
RKC Waalwijk first told its fans on “X” (formerly Twitter): “As soon as we know more, we will get in touch with you. Thank you very much and have a safe journey home.”
Shortly following midnight, the club gave a first update: “We are extremely shocked by the incident on the pitch involving our goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen. We can inform you that following a comprehensive medical examination he is conscious and has been taken to hospital for further examination . We wish Etienne a lot of strength and hope to have him back with us soon.”
Waalwijk gives the all-clear on Sunday
On Sunday, Waalwijk reported with another update and gave the all-clear. Vaessen had “a good night” and continued to recover: “We hope to see him back at the club soon.”
Opponents Ajax were also dismayed following the incident. “This is regarding more than just football. We pray that you are well, Etienne,” said the Dutch top club’s profile.
