Vienna (OTS) – Work has been underway for less than two weeks to relocate services from the Vienna-Brigittenau trauma center to our Meidling location or the AKH. The fact that an entire hospital has to be relocated within just a few weeks has never happened before in recent Austrian history. The challenges are immense, but are being worked through step by step thanks to the good cross-location cooperation at AUVA. At this point we would like to thank both our employees and our partners for the good and solution-oriented cooperation.
LOCATIONS: TZW Meidling | AKH | Ambulance TZW Brigittenau
TZW Meidling
At our Meidling location, inpatient capacities will be expanded to include two wards with a total of 50-52 beds. Additional operating room capacities are also available in the form of two additional operating theaters that can be planned.
AKH
As reported, the AKH provides us with a ward with 23 beds and corresponding operating room capacity for the acute care of recently injured patients.
Ambulance TZW Brigittenau
We are currently working on site to upgrade the outpatient department in terms of fire protection. To this end, structural measures are carried out in close coordination with the authorities, especially at times of low frequency. As reported, an initial examination clinic for self-arriving patients will remain in operation even following inpatient services have been relocated.
Location for planned operations
We are currently in final discussions regarding additional hospital infrastructure to process planned operations.
SCHEDULED APPOINTMENTS:
Planned operations as well as acute operations will be carried out at the Brigittenau location until March 25th. After this point, operations will be conducted at our deployed locations.
Due to the upcoming shifts in services, postponements are unavoidable; However, no planned operation will be canceled without replacement. Patients affected by appointment postponements will be informed in writing in the coming days. There are a total of 379 outstanding operations that need to be relocated to remote locations. More than half of the appointments involve an orthopedic-related procedure or metal removal. 165 interventions are purely trauma-related. In accordance with the AUVA’s legal mandate, work-related accidents are given priority. In addition, all procedures will be postponed based on medical urgency. The operations will continue to be carried out by the tried and tested teams at the Brigittenau/Lorenz Böhler location, just at other locations. Patients will be informed gradually and as soon as possible regarding new appointments. For questions relating to appointment postponements We have set up the following contact points for our patients:

PERSONAL:
We are currently working hard on the rosters for operations at the relocated locations as well as for the outpatient department at the Brigittenau location. The highest value is placed on the proven team system.
In order to determine the personnel conditions for the duration of the temporary shift in performance until the end of 2024, a social agreement was drawn up together with the central works council and the works councils at the Brigittenau and Meidling locations, which, among other things, guarantees that no dismissals or worsening of the situation will take place as part of the shift in performance. The agreement is currently being finalized; The bilateral signing was planned for the next two days. In addition, the works council bodies were assured that they would be involved in greater depth in the specific planning work associated with the transfer of services. The first joint discussions have already taken place today.
For doctors in training, it is ensured that they can continue to enjoy the same quality of training as before. In the short term, certain delays cannot be ruled out, but in the medium term, any deficits will be compensated for here too.
In addition, intensive work is currently being done on many larger and smaller topics. For example, parking spaces were organized for our employees in the AKH garage. In this context, we would particularly like to thank the AKH and the MedUni Vienna for the collegial vote.
INTERIM SOLUTION 2025:
As reported, the team from the Vienna Brigittenau Trauma Center will be brought together once more at a common location from the beginning of 2025. The relevant planning work has been started and the search for a suitable property in the vicinity is currently underway. The plan is to build a container hospital or a temporary modular building that can be used until 2030. In addition, the possibility of upgrading the building on Donaueschingenstrasse in terms of fire protection will also be carefully examined for the period from the relocation of the business until the end of 2024.
