King Albert will stay a few days longer than expected in the hospital, while his potential release had been announced for this Monday, we learned from the Royal Palace. His convalescence is going well but the former sovereign still needs time and rest.

Albert II had been admitted to hospital for symptoms of dehydration last Tuesday. There was talk of a return home for this Monday, but it was therefore finally decided to keep the former head of state in the hospital for a few more days for observation.

“The recovery is going well”, reassures a spokesperson for the Palace. “But, in consultation with the doctors, it was decided not to take any risks and to extend the hospital stay.”

King Albert II was unable to celebrate yesterday (Sunday) his 64th anniversary with his wife, at the Belvedere castle. .

The 89-year-old King Albert’s health has not deteriorated, but he needs enough time and rest to recover, it is said. It is not yet known when he will be able to leave the hospital. Albert was the sixth King of the Belgians and remained on the throne for just under 20 years.

On July 3, 2013, just ten years ago, he had abdicated in favor of his son Philippe. In recent years, the former sovereign has had to deal with several health problems. He is particularly sensitive to the heart and had to have a skin tumor removed on his scalp in 2014.
