Santé Publique France has published its weekly epidemiological update on Reunion, for the week of May 29 to June 4, 2023. Health authorities are drawing attention to two viruses that are currently circulating: influenza and leptospirosis.

Santé Publique France communicated this Monday, June 12, the regional epidemiological update concerning the week of May 29 to June 4, 2023 (week 22).

Among the points to be highlighted in Reunion, the presence of the flu at the start of the austral winter. The flu virus, during the week of May 29 to June 4, was the cause of two visits to intensive care. The epidemic threshold has thus been crossed, notes Public Health France, which nevertheless remains vigilant. From one week to the next, the number of visits to the emergency room for flu-like illness increased slightly and went from 13 in week 21 to 20 in week 22.

Another virus to watch out for is leptospirosis. In the past week alone, 12 cases have been diagnosed, causing sustained hospital activity. For comparison, the same week last year, there were fewer than 5 new cases of leptospirosis.

This marked incidence of leptospirosis at this time of year seems to be linked to the late drop in temperatures and the rains of recent times.“, notes Public Health France.

Since the beginning of the year, 106 cases of leptospirosis have been confirmed in Reunion as of June 7. In nearly one out of two cases, the infected people lived in the South. Health authorities have noted 61 visits to the emergency room, including 41 hospitalizations for suspected leptospirosis in 2023.

Finally, concerning the Covid-19, it was still in Reunion at the beginning of the month, even if the viral circulation is decreasing. The incidence rate on the island in week 22 was 42 per 100,000 population. 12 new hospitalizations due to Covid were recorded that week, as well as two new deaths.
