The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDCP) published on July 31 a situation update on the diphtheria epidemic. The epidemic is growing.
In July 2023, 1,506 suspected cases have been reported from 59 local government areas (LGAs) in 11 states across the country. The states of Kano (1,055), Yobe (232), Kaduna (85), Katsina (58), Bauchi (47) and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) (18) accounted for 99.3% of all cases suspects. Of the 1,506 suspected cases reported, 579 (38.5%) were confirmed (29 lab-confirmed; 114 outbreak-related; 436 clinically compatible), 650 (43.2%) have been ruled out, 205 (13.6%) are awaiting classification and 72 (4.8%) are awaiting classification. awaiting classification and 72 (4.8%) are unknown. A total of 39 deaths have been recorded among all confirmed confirmed cases (CFR: 6.7%).
Over the period from May 2022 to July 2023cumulatively:
4,160 suspected cases have been reported in 27 states across 139 LGAs nationwide.Kano (3 233), Yobe (477), Katsina (132), Kaduna (101), Bauchi (54), FCT (41) et Lagos (30) account for 97.8% of suspected cases. Of the 4,160 suspected cases reported, 1,534 (36.9%) were confirmed (87 laboratory confirmed; 158 outbreak-related; 1,289 clinically compatible), 1,700 (40.9%) have been ruled out, 639 (15.4%) are awaiting classification and 287 (6.9%) are unknown.Concerning the 1,534 confirmed cases (including 579 in July)Confirmed cases are spread across 56 LGAs in eleven states (3 new states affected in July). The majority [1 018 (66,4%)] confirmed cases have occurred in children aged 1 to 14 years. A total of 137 deaths were recorded among all confirmed cases (CFR: 8.9%). Of the 1,534 confirmed cases, 1,257 (81.9%) were not fully vaccinated once morest diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus.
