Energy suppliers are not done with the discounting yet. Some are planning a drop in electricity and gas prices starting in the New Year, while others will publish new price lists before the end of this year.
Calls for quick fixes are more likely to be made to price comparators, which mediate prices between suppliers and customers.
Starting in January, the electricity and gas costs of roughly 1.5 million ČEZ customers who have the product for an indefinite period will drop. Price lists for new customers are expected to drop even sooner. “For fixed products, on the other hand, we plan to announce very attractive price lists later this year, so customers can look forward to the fourth discount in a row,” says ČEZ spokeswoman Alice Horáková.
Price reductions are also planned by Pražská plynárenská. “It is a fixed one-year product that will be one of the best on the market right now. Within the commodity component, it will be CZK 1,000 per MWh for gas and CZK 2,590 for electricity. The offer applies to all customers – households and businesses, i.e. existing and new ones,” says Miroslav Vránek, spokesperson for Pražská plynárenská.
This year, however, some existing customers who have not finished their fixation or who are not planning to change suppliers are also in for a discount. “Until the end of the year, we will make gas and electricity cheaper for customers without a fixed price, i.e. customers who have contracts for an indefinite period,” says innogy spokesman Pavel Grochál.

But even this year’s reduction is not the last, most suppliers are planning further reductions in the first months of 2025. But everything will depend on what happens on the energy exchange. “If something doesn’t go ‘wrong’ on the energy markets over the winter, these customers will see another drop in prices in the first months of next year,” adds Grochál.
The development will affect whether there will be enough electricity and gas and whether it will be a mild winter. “We look at future price developments rather optimistically, but it would be premature at this moment to speak unequivocally about further concrete price reductions,” says Pražská energetika spokesman Karel Hanzelka.
For example, CEZ will reduce electricity and gas prices for the product for an indefinite period from January, as will the supplier Centropol.

Products for an indefinite period can respond better to changes in the market, and a possible decrease or increase in prices can be reflected in them even several times during the year. “Current market developments and our purchasing strategy have given us the opportunity to further reduce prices for our regular customers. Our price lists have been reduced several times this year and will be reduced again at the beginning of next year, which brings significant savings to clients,” promises E.ON spokesperson Roman Šperňák. Discounts await 700,000 households.
For products with a fixation for new customers, the offer price may decrease faster, but the customer must agree to it for the entire duration of the fixation. It will therefore be the same for one to three years per megawatt hour (MWh).
“Furthermore, we adjust the prices of fixed products, where over the last calendar year the price of the commodity natural gas will be reduced by 17 percent and the commodity electricity by almost 16 percent. However, a number of our clients are expecting a reduction in the price of the commodity component by as much as 38 percent from January,” explains Centropol Marketing Director Jiří Matoušek.
The supplier MND does not yet see room for a further drop in the offered prices, but according to its spokeswoman Dana Dvořáková, it will, like other traders, adjust prices if the markets allow it in 2025.
“From January 1, 2025, we are reducing the price per MWh of gas and electricity for more than 150,000 customers in the basic price list and price list with a ceiling. Similar to this year, we plan to adjust the price list offer with a fixed price according to the market situation,” says Dvořáková.

Most energy suppliers buy forwards on so-called forwards, where the price is lower than on the daily market. While the price of electricity on the spot has been hovering around 100 euros per MWh in recent days, in long-term markets the price is usually 10 to 30 euros cheaper per MWh.

“We have already secured electricity and natural gas for the year 2025, we have all ‘fixed prices’ insured, and according to the purchased operations we will deliver even lower prices to our clients during 2025 as well,” says Matoušek.
Short-term price fluctuations, for example an increase in the price of electricity on the stock exchange ke 400 euros last Wednesdaywill not appear in the price lists. “For fixed products, we buy both electricity and gas for the entire duration of the fixation. For non-fixed products, we combine long-term and short-term purchases,” says Horáková from ČEZ, adding that they can now offer customers a better price.
According to the preliminary price decision, the regulated fees for most rates should increase by one percent, with the exception of heating D57d, where the regulated part will become cheaper. However, the drop in the price of power electricity should offset this increase.
