Up to 27 € per kilo: the price of tomatoes explodes


From the basic vine tomato sold at €3 to the luxurious varieties at over €27: prices are soaring.

As we arrive at the height of the tomato season, they have never been so expensive. On market stalls, as in supermarkets, their prices are skyrocketing.

Unheard of for certain varieties, which are displayed at up to €27.72 per kilo. Admittedly, this is not the good old vine tomato, but a “honey-flavoured” variety, sold in small 180 g trays that smell full of pure marketing product, but the other varieties weigh well. heavier in the wallet than in the balance.

Once once more, the Ukrainian conflict is singled out. How is this possible, will say the most skeptical, finding that Ukraine has a good back and yet is not a producer and exporter of the tomatoes we consume. On the other hand, the sunshine not having been optimal at the beginning of the season, it was necessary to grow these greenhouse tomatoes with a lot of heating… with gas. The production of tomatoes, like all fruits and vegetables, also requires fertilizer, mainly produced in Russia and Ukraine and whose prices have quadrupled since the beginning of the year.
