Up to -16 degrees: This is what the weather will be like on the Kitzbühel runs

The piste workers still have a lot of work to do before the races can take place over the Hahnenkamm. Or rather a pile of snow that will fall on Friday night: Josef Haslhofer from GeoSphere Austria is expecting 5 to 10 centimeters of new snow, which will have to be removed from the slopes on Friday morning. Once that’s done, from his point of view nothing should stand in the way of an exciting race weekend, at least in terms of weather.

Frosty: not the mood, just the temperatures

However, Friday might still be a bit cloudy, with occasional breaks, but possibly a few snowflakes. Above all, the meteorologist predicts that it will be cold: at 1,500 meters above sea level you have to expect around -10 degrees, and you should also be prepared for cold in the valleys. However, only the temperatures should be frosty, not the atmosphere in the finish area or along the route. Numerous fans will certainly ensure that once more this year.

The sky will be clear on Saturday night. “This means it cools down even more. In the morning we are in the double-digit minus range,” says Haslhofer. For the Ehrenbachhöhe, 1,800 meters above sea level, it currently looks like -16 to a “maximum temperature” of -6 degrees. “Anyone traveling there should really dress warmly,” says the meteorologist. “It really is the dead of winter.”

Apart from that, Saturday is the perfect day for a trip to the racetrack: “There is a lot of sun and ideal visibility for watching.”

Sunday will be more moderate

The sky will still be clear on Sunday night, which will cause the temperatures to fall – but during the day this will ease off and it will get warmer, said Haslhofer. From the current perspective it still looks sunny until midday, but then clouds will move in. “How quickly they’ll get there, you can’t say yet.” According to the meteorologist, the weather should still be quite good for the spectators at the slalom planned for Sunday. With temperatures between -11 and 0 degrees, it is still cold, but a little more temperate.

And the fresh snow that will fall on Friday night should also provide the perfect background image for an atmospheric and exciting racing weekend.
