Venezuelan migrants passing through Nicaragua denounced that officials of that country They charge them up to 150 dollars to be able to transit through their territory. The fact was announced on August 11 through a video published by Nicaraguan News on his Instagram channel.
An official appears in the audiovisual explaining to people the amount they must pay for a document. It is unknown if it is legal and if the payment is in cash. “If you pay them immediately, we write them down in the registry so that they can continue”, is heard saying.
This measure was described by travelers as extortion by officials. Even children must also pay the amount indicated.
In case of not having the money to pay the 150 dollars, the Nicaraguan official pointed out that they would have to contact the Managua authorities to see “how to fix it.”
The Nicaraguan government reported that in recent months the passage of migrants, both Venezuelans and other nationalities, who enter irregularly by sea, has increased. Most of them travel the route from Medellín to the island of San Andrés, in Colombia, and then move on to the Nicaraguan island of Corn Island.
