While the Tour de France has only just delivered its last verdicts by crowning Jonas Vingegaard for the 2nd time, the whole peloton already has its eyes riveted on Glasgow.
From August 3 to 13, the Scottish capital will indeed host the World Cycling Championships. Highlight of these 10 days? The online race, obviously highly anticipated, scheduled for Sunday August 6th. So what should we expect? What route? We analyze it in detail.
“The hell of changes of direction.”
This is how we might summarize, in a not very simplistic way, the 271.1km route between Edinbourg et Glasgow. It might also be divided into two parts. A first, between the two Scottish cities precisely, which will start near Arthur’s Sea, an old volcano, and will include 120km. Only one difficulty in the program, 20km from the entrance to the circuit.
Then this famous circuit, 14.3 km long, which will be the scene of the 2nd part of the race, and which the runners will have to cover… ten times. And so, what does this circuit look like? Well, it looks particularly technical on paper. Few are the straight lines, many are the incessant changes of direction at 90 degrees that will enamel the course. A course where some favorites, less alert or vigilant, might leave feathers.
Note, too, that a short bump is placed 2 kilometers from the finish. The ideal place to place an attack and anticipate a grouped arrival?
To conclude, we bet that this course, somewhat similar to that of 2019 in Yorkshire (victory for Mads Pedersen) will crown the most resistant of the contenders. 271.1km, it’s long, the course is technical, you’ll have to bite on your chewing and sniff out the right shot.
So, can a Belgian do it? They will be three Belgian leaders to dream of the iridescent bib: Wout van Aert, Jasper Philipsen, and the defending champion, Remco Evenepoel who wants to regain his throne.
