A blue zone? This is the concept invented by the Belgian demographer Michel Poulain who, for decades, has been sifting through statistics in order to determine the places on the planet where there is an extraordinary longevity rate. Greece (Ikaria), Costa Rica (Nicoya), Sardinia, Japan (Okinawa) and, more recently, Martinique are the five blue zones listed by the specialist. “I have just returned from Sardinia, where I started my research 20 years ago,” explains the Belgian researcher (UCLouvain). “It doesn’t make us any younger,” he laughs.
