The song Orly, by Jacques Brel, had not revealed all its secrets. A new acoustic version has just been unveiled to mark the 45th anniversary of the singer’s death.

“Life gives no gifts,” sings Brel in Orly. And yet, his fans receive a very nice one, when a new acoustic version of the song is revealed. This version, never heard, appeared on the original multitrack tapes.

This song, released in 1977, a year before Jacques Brel’s death, appeared on his last album Les Marquises. It was published on the B side of a 45 rpm with Les Remparts de Varsovie on the A side.

This song is regarding a heartbreaking scene, that of a couple who separate at Orly airport. He is getting ready to take a plane, while she remains on the ground.

“All embedded as they are, they no longer hear anything/Only the sobs of the other,” sings Brel.

In a book of interviews with Paul-Robert Thomas, entitled Jacques Brel: J’attends la nuit, Brel saw in these “two lovers who separate”, “a metaphor for life and death. Of a being who feels his life slipping away from him. The singer was suffering from cancer, which would take his life on October 9, 1978.
