Reading of the holy gospel according to Saint Matthew
Mt 21, 33-43. 45-46
At that time, Jesus told the chief priests and the elders of the people this parable: “Once upon a time there was a landowner who planted a vineyard, surrounded it with a fence, dug a winepress in it, built a tower for the watchman, and then He rented to some vineyard owners and went on a trip.
When harvest time arrived, he sent his servants to ask the vinedressers for their share of the fruits; But they seized the servants, beat one, killed another, and stoned another. He once more sent other servants, in greater numbers than the first, and they treated them in the same way.
Finally, he sent them his own son, thinking: ‘They will respect my son.’ But when the tenants saw him, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Let’s kill him and keep his inheritance.’ They laid hands on him, took him out of the vineyard and killed him.
Now tell me: When the owner of the vineyard returns, what will he do with those vinedressers?” They answered him: “He will put these heartless people to a terrible death and will rent the vineyard to other vinedressers, who will deliver the fruits to him in due time.”
Then Jesus said to them: “Have you never read in the Scripture: The stone that the builders rejected is now the cornerstone. This is the work of the Lord and it is an admirable wonder?”
For this reason I tell you that the Kingdom of God will be taken from you and will be given to a people that will produce its fruits.”
Upon hearing these words, the chief priests and the Pharisees understood that Jesus was saying them for them and they wanted to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd, because he was considered a prophet.
