Abdesalem Lassoued, the author of the Brussels attack which cost the lives of two Swedish supporters and seriously injured a third, was born in Tunisia on September 1, 1978. On January 13, 2005, he was sentenced in his country of origin to a sentence of more than 26 years in prison for a double attempted murder.

On the night of January 15 to 16, 2011, in the midst of the Tunisian revolution, he escaped with a group of detainees and flew to Europe. He unsuccessfully requested asylum in Norway (June 2011), Sweden (September 2012) and Italy (April 2014), before arriving in Belgium.
