Cases of Hepatitis Due to Sleepberry Supplements

In Iceland, Japan, India, Poland and the USA independent individual cases reported in which young, healthy people with acute hepatitis had to be hospitalized. Virulent, autoimmunological or other causes of liver inflammation might be ruled out through clinical tests. The young people had all started taking an ashwaganda supplement several months earlier.

The sleeping berry has shown hepatotoxic effects in mouse models together with gentamicin. In addition, the withanolides contained in cell experiments are liver-damaging and promote inflammation.

*One in June 2023 in the journal Pharmaceuticals published study with case reports and one Dutch investigation from September 2023 summarize: Liver damage from taking an ashwaganda extract usually occurs three to ten months following starting supplementation. In most cases, daily rations were between 450 and 1350 mg taken. Liver damage usually improved one to two weeks following discontinuation of the drug. There is also a known case of severe liver damage with liver transplantation. The pathomechanism of hepatoxicity caused by sleepberry extract is unknown.
