On the same day, Huaqiao University held a theme event to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Tan Kah Kee and the premiere ceremony of the “Remembering Kah Kee” series of short videos to commemorate the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee and further inherit and carry forward the “Kah Kee Spirit.”

Xu Xipeng, Secretary of the Party Committee of Huaqiao University, pointed out in his speech that as an overseas Chinese school, Huaqiao University has been closely connected with overseas Chinese donations, overseas Chinese businessmen, overseas Chinese history, overseas Chinese youth and overseas students since its establishment 64 years ago. It has continued to develop under the influence of the Geng Spirit and has cultivated more than 260,000 talents of various types, of which more than 60,000 are distributed in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas, becoming friendly envoys promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and foreign countries.

Since its establishment, Huaqiao University has had a profound relationship with Mr. Tan Kah Kee. In 1960, the country decided to establish Huaqiao University. Mr. Tan Kah Kee, then chairman of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, donated 5 million in foreign exchange donations to Huaqiao University, which was specifically used to import advanced instruments, equipment and construction materials needed by the school. The predecessor of the school’s Chinese Language School was Jimei Overseas Chinese Supplementary School. The Chinese government adopted Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s suggestion and entrusted him to preside over the preparation for its establishment.

The launch ceremony of the “Remembering Jiageng” series of short videos was held at the same time. This series of short videos is to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Tan Kah Kee. It was spontaneously organized, planned and shot by all 119 students of the Kah Kee Academy of Huaqiao University. The students divided Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s life and deeds into four chapters and twelve short stories: “loyalty”, “sincerity”, “diligence” and “innovation”, and created a total of 12 short videos.

“We looked up information, read relevant books, visited the Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall, etc., combined what we learned and felt to write short stories about Mr. Kah Kee’s deeds, and used short videos to show Mr. Kah Kee’s touching deeds.” Kong Zhiyong, an international student from Cambodia, mainly participated in “Diligence and Thrift” “Through each story, we have a deeper understanding of Jiageng’s spirit.”

On the same day, in order to commend advanced students and set examples, Wang Xiuyong, Vice President of Huaqiao University, issued certificates of honor to Tan Kah Kee Scholarship students who have performed outstandingly in the past year.

It is reported that since the establishment of the Tan Kah Kee Scholarship in 2017, Huaqiao University has received a total of 408 overseas Chinese students from 9 countries and regions co-building the “Belt and Road”.
