Unveiling the Epic Story Mode and Jaw-Dropping Ending of Mortal Kombat 1: A Multiverse Adventure

Mortal Kombat 1 officially launches today, and there’s a lot more to check out than just killing your friends to gruesome deaths. One of these is the story mode, which focuses on Liu Kang trying to keep his timeline stable from new and dangerous threats. The ending is insane, as Ed Boon told us in an interview at Gamescom, but if you haven’t made it to the ending yet or you want to see what this means for the future of Mortal Kombat, we’ve got you covered Ready. Of course, there are massive story spoilers in this article, so if you want to go in blind, we recommend turning away now. But if you’ve read this far, we’re guessing you’re not one to shy away from spoilers. Once it was discovered that Shang Tsung and Quan Chi’s powers came not from the mysterious entity Damash, but from another Shang Tsung from a different timeline, Liu Kang gathered allies from other timelines to face this ultimate threat. It’s really kind of like chaos in the multiverse, but it ends with Armageddon, which is a battle between all the forces of good and all the forces of evil. Multiple versions of familiar characters appear, and you must choose who to bring with you to the final showdown with Shang Tsung, with Liu Kang at your side as Kameo. Here’s an ad: You’ll get a few different dialogue options depending on the object you choose, but otherwise your battles will consist of a round of brawling with random combinations of familiar faces. For example, Quan Chi is mixed with Sub-Zero. Sindel and Reptile merge into a reptilian femme fatale. It’s weird and wacky, but entertaining, coupled with the cinematic qualities usually associated with MK’s stories. We also see cameos from the Kombat Kids, Ninja Pantomime, and more, and nearly everyone meets a bloody end as you climb to the top. There, you’ll confront the Titan Shang Tsung after a cutscene, with Liu Kang exiting the fight. Once beaten, you will be sent back to Fengjian Village, where the story begins. Our Earth heroes are drinking tea and Johnny Cage talks about the movie he’s making about their adventures. All is well, Liu Kang has restored order to the timeline. Despite this, there are new threats, such as Lin Kui, who have turned to the Earth realm. This effectively ends Mortal Kombat 1’s story, taking us back to the end of the world, but on an ever-increasing scale as Titans now litter the battlefield. But that’s not all there is to see. In the post-credits sequence, we see that not everyone dies in the final battle, with the titan Harwick waiting, enjoying the chaos unfolding before him. He kills Jax and sets himself up as the next major villain. Here’s the ad: It looks like Harwick will be our villain as Mortal Kombat 1 enters a multiverse story. In this version of the universe, Harwick is still from the Realm of Chaos, but this time he is more powerful as he will control his own hourglass as a Titan. Many fans will happily ditch the typical villains of Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, and Shao Kahn in favor of the more chaotic nature of Harwick. The multiverse offers endless potential for Mortal Kombat, but let’s just hope it doesn’t fall as flat as the Marvel Multiverse has done so far. What did you think of the ending of Mortal Kombat 1? Where do you think the story will go next?
