Strasbourg (OTS) – “Lucarne – The Late Show”, the worldwide unique documentary rendezvous on ARTE, offers a selection of the best current, creative author’s films over three long nights on November 4th, 11th and 18th, 2024, including six first broadcasts.
In our complex world, life often becomes a struggle for survival. ARTE shows a total of seven author’s films that delve into the difficult everyday lives of children, young people and adults. Into the lives of people who don’t let the harshness and injustice of the world get them down and keep room for dreams despite the most adverse circumstances. All films and other works are available exclusively online at arte.tv/lucarne, including rarely shown classics by well-known authors and award-winning festival films.

In “The Echo” by award-winning filmmaker Tatiana Huezo, children in a remote village in northern Mexico learn to understand death, illness and love at an early age. In “Where We Used To Sleep” Matthäus Wörle documents the life of an old Romanian woman who stubbornly holds out on her farm while the entire village sinks into the toxic mud of the copper mine. “We Will Not Fade Away” by Alisa Kovalenko follows five Ukrainian teenagers who set off from their native Donbass to the peaks of the Himalayas, giving them the opportunity to discover life far away from the morbid reality of war. “The Man I Left Behind” delves into the work of the renowned Canadian Magnum photographer Larry Towell, who documented the fate of displaced people worldwide for over 40 years, a cinematic essay about man’s relationship with the earth. Abdallah el-Khatib’s “Little Palestine,” a chronicle of the siege of a Palestinian refugee camp on the outskirts of Damascus, is both a hymn to life and a testament to the devastating process of dictatorships’ cruelty. Matas, a 14-year-old teenager in “To Our Wailing Hearts,” is faced with a strict daily discipline and vital challenge in a rehabilitation center for drug addicts in the heart of Lithuania. The selection of films is rounded off by a repeat of Jay Rosenblatt’s classic “When We Were Bullies”, which tells of a bullying case in a New York school in the 1960s.
