The journalist and columnist of THE UNIVERSAL, Mario Maldonado presented his new book titled “Confessions from exile: Enrique Peña Nieto. The secrets and scandals of the last PRI government”, which reveals through various interviews all the secrets of the last PRI president.
The book edited by Planetportrays, according to the editorial itself, “all the details of his origin in Atlacomulco, his meteoric rise, his closest men and the “Mexican Moment”—which contrasted with the social crises that marked millions of Mexicans, such as Ayotzinapa—, in addition to his relationship with Carlos Salinas de Gortari, his last meeting with Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the documented cases of corruption and his self-exile.”
Yesterday, the journalist presented the cover of his book through his X account, accompanied by a video of a meeting with the former president of Mexico.
“I share with you the cover of the book that I told you regarding yesterday, regarding former President Enrique Peña Nieto, which will be available in the following days in bookstores in the country and in audiobook,” the journalist wrote.

The work, according to Maldonado himself, is based on a series of meetings and conversations with the former president following six years of exile in Madrid, Spain, and in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, which occurred during the last year and a half.
The following text is an extract from the book edited by Planeta:
The last call between Enrique Peña Nieto and Andrés Manuel López Obrador was on Friday, September 15, 2023.
Ironically, the president was inaugurating the first section of the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train, baptized by his government as El Insurgente.
This was Peña Nieto’s flagship transportation project, which was not completed during his administration and, unlike others that were canceled – such as the Texcoco Airport -, this one was “rescued” by the López Obrador government.
The call was made through two contacts: one close to the former PRI president and the other with Daniel Asaf Manjarrez, the person in charge of coordinating López Obrador’s Assistant.
Peña Nieto called Asaf on WhatsApp and he, in turn, communicated it to López Obrador. The conversation was brief, just a minute or two.
Peña Nieto thanked him for the words he gave him a day earlier, when he called him a “democrat” for not having intervened in the 2018 elections in which he was the winner. “I very much appreciate yesterday’s gesture, Mr. President,” Peña told him.
A day ago, on Thursday, September 14, during a political event in which the government of the PRI Alfredo del Mazo handed over power to the Morenista Delfina Gómez in the Mexican Congress, López Obrador “thanked” the outgoing governor in his speech and to the former president of Mexico for not “having gotten involved” in the elections that gave victory to his movement.
“I am president because the people of Mexico decided it freely, but I also have to recognize that President Peña, unlike the other two presidents [Vicente Fox y Felipe Calderón]I say this with all due respect, he did not get involved, that is, he did not accept cheating and he respected the will of the people of Mexico. I’m not going to forget that.”
And so it was: López Obrador did not forget that gesture throughout his six-year term, because despite the investigations and public scrutiny, until this book was delivered for publication, there was no attempt to proceed legally once morest former President Peña Nieto.
López Obrador’s response to Peña Nieto’s call was to reiterate what he said in his speech in Toluca: «Thank you, Enrique, you behaved like a democrat, I will not forget that. “May you be well,” were the words with which he concluded that communication, according to a source who witnessed it, following almost six years of not having had direct contact.
