A Chinese startup has created a battery that can produce electricity for 50 years without recharging or maintenance.
According to Beijing-based company BetaVolt, its nuclear battery is the first example of miniaturization of nuclear energy. Smaller than a coin (15 x 15 x 5mm) in size, this model holds 63 nuclear isotopes.
The company said the next-generation battery has entered the pilot testing phase and is regarding to begin mass production for economic applications such as phones and drones.
The company said in a press release that Betavolt’s nuclear energy batteries are capable of meeting the long-lasting power supply needs of aerospace, artificial intelligence devices, medical devices, microprocessors, advanced sensors, small drones and micro-robots. .
The press release said that this new energy innovation will help China lead the new era of artificial intelligence technology revolution.
This battery converts the energy released due to the decay of isotopes into electricity. Thus the battery produces 100 microwatts and 3 volts of electricity.
It should be noted that the Soviet Union and the United States had the ability to develop this technology for use in spacecraft, underwater systems, and remote scientific stations. However, thermonuclear batteries faced the problems of being both expensive and bulky.
